Lawmaker is elected
as choice for speaker
Republicans in Virginia’s House of Delegates on Wednesday unanimously elected Del. M. Kirkland Cox (R-Colonial Heights) as their choice for the next speaker of the House.
Assuming that Republicans retain control of the House of Delegates in November, Cox, who currently serves as the chamber’s majority leader, will replace Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford), who plans to retire at the end of his term in January. Howell, who has led the chamber for 15 sessions, announced Monday that he would not seek reelection.
Cox, 59, a retired government teacher, has been a state delegate since 1990.
Officer on restricted
duty after car crash
A Fairfax County police officer has been placed on restricted duty after a February crash that sent another driver to the hospital with serious injuries, Fairfax police said.
The officer’s cruiser was traveling above the speed limit and had no emergency lights on when it struck a Toyota Sienna van in an intersection in the Seven Corners area at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The officer was westbound on Leesburg Pike, approaching Patrick Henry Drive, when the van made a left turn in front of the marked cruiser, police said. The officer, a two-year veteran, notified dispatchers of the crash and tried to help the 53-year-old van driver of the van. The man was rushed to a hospital.
“He’s still in the hospital and stable,” said Officer Don Gotthardt, a police spokesman, referring to the van’s driver.
Police did not reveal the officer’s name.
