The Boston Globe’s editorial board wants Massachusetts voters to support the ballot question to lift the state’s cap on charter schools. In an editorial posted online Friday titled “Vote ‘yes’ on Question 2,” the Globe wrote that voters “have the chance to continue a successful strategy in public education” by approving the measure. If passed, Question 2 would allow the state to raise the current 120-school charter cap by allowing 12 new charter schools per year. The proposal has the support of Gov. Charlie Baker, who appeared in an ad released earlier this week, while Mayor Marty Walsh and the state’s Democratic Party oppose it

A new survey conducted by the Globe and Suffolk University found voters are split on whether to approve the expansion.

“If passed, the proposal would create new opportunities for the 32,000 students, predominantly black and Latino, who are now languishing on waiting lists hoping for a spot at a charter school — public schools overseen by the state rather than local districts,” the Globe wrote, arguing that confusion over the question has been largely generated by the measure’s opponents.

The editorial will appear in Sunday’s print edition of the newspaper. Read it here.
