MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A state commission has approved plans for Alabama’s first charter school to open in Mobile.
The Alabama Public Charter School Commission voted Tuesday to allow the Accel Day and Evening Academy to begin operating. It will serve students at least 16 years of age who have dropped out or fallen behind academically.
Al.com (https://bit.ly/2cZa2jk ) reports that the Mobile Area Education Foundation plans to open the school for the academic year beginning in August 2017.
The commission also granted preliminary approval for a sports-themed charter school in Huntsville but says operators must get approval under a federal court order on desegregation. Members rejected plans for another charter school in Huntsville.
Alabama lawmakers passed legislation in 2015 allowing charter schools, which are publicly funded but have more autonomy that typical schools.
