The Health of the Charter Public School Movement

A State-by-State Analysis

Today, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools released The Health of the Charter Public School Movement: A State-by-State Analysis, which evaluates the health of the charter public school movement in key states across the country. Following the first report released in October 2014, this second edition measures movement growth, innovation, and quality, while this year doubling the number of quality measures. Due to these quality additions, a total of 18 states with charter school laws met the criteria for inclusion in this year’s report.

As we have learned, it is not enough to just pass a strong law; we must also make sure that it is implemented well and that other factors for success are in place. Intended as a companion piece to the annual state charter law rankings released earlier this year, the new health rankings provide a comprehensive picture of how charter laws are working in practice. Most of the states with higher-ranked charter school laws are also highly ranked in the health-of-the-movement rankings.

This report provides a helpful framework for determining the overall health of the charter school movement. We are pleased to refine our work to address the question of how states are growing and strengthening their charter schools.
