NEW GRANTS: U.S. Department of Education Announces 2024 Charter Schools Program Grant Recipients
Last week, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced the Charter Schools Program (CSP) grant recipients for FY 2024. In total, the CSP granted more than $525 million to 16 states, charter school developers, and community development financial institutions (CDFIs) that will be awarded over the next three to five years. Grants are used to open new public charter schools, replicate high-performing public charter schools across the country, and support the financing of facilities.
“Congratulations to all recipients – state entities, non-profits, and school leaders – who earned grants to continue the incredible work they’re doing on the ground to educate students,”says Starlee Coleman, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. “The CSP is an essential funding stream from the federal government to help charter schools thrive and replicate. Without it, students and families would have fewer options in public education.”
LEARN MORE: How The Equitable Access to School Facilities Act Would Help Charter Schools
Access to appropriate school facilities is a critical barrier to charter school growth and to providing the best and safest educational setting for students. But the Equitable Access to School Facilities Act, introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Representative Michelle Steel of California and last year in the Senate by Senators Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Michael Bennet of Colorado, offers new solutions. Here are 3 ways this bill would help charter schools if enacted:
Expand the types of facilities support programs eligible for funds under SFIG.
Prioritize funds for states with certain policies in place.
Incentivize states to adopt more favorable facilities policies.
