WHAT'S NEW: Updates from the National Alliance 

  • Happy Women's History Month! Thank you to the women, past and present, who make this movement possible. 
  • During the final week of Black History Month we shared many inspiring and uplifting stories from students, school leaders, and movement leaders on our blog. Don't miss these awesome posts!

  • Nearly 50 school leaders of color visited the nation's capital to advocate for public education, families, and students in their states.  
    • Read more about their advocacy efforts below. We thank these wonderful leaders for dedicating their time, expertise, and passion to advocate for public education.  
  • More than 1,000 Georgia teachers and students from Black-led charter schools recently participated in an advocacy day at the state Capitol alongside elected leaders. Read more about the event below! 
  • Thanks goes out to Idaho Governor Brad Little for signing into law HB 422, the Accelerating Public Charter Schools Act, which provides public charter schools in Idaho with more flexibility to innovate while still being held accountable for results. 
  • This Wednesday, Mar. 6, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce is holding a hearing with charter advocates and Committee members titled Proven Results: Highlighting the Benefits of Charter Schools for Students and Families.
    • This hearing will take place at the Rayburn House Office Building at 10:15 a.m. ET in Room 2175. You can also livestream the proceedings.

ADVOCATE: School Leaders of Color Bring Message of Equity to Washington, D.C.

 

In more than 80 meetings with congressional lawmakers and staff, charter school leaders of color emphasized equity, innovation, and hope in education. They highlighted:

  • Personal experiences showing how charter schools provide high-quality education, especially for students of color.
  • The need to address resource gaps and inequities in public education through innovative solutions.
  • Data demonstrating charter schools' role in promoting diversity and serving students from low-income backgrounds.
  • Strong parental support for public school choice, particularly among families of color.

They also stressed the importance of the Charter Schools Program in supporting charter school growth and called for equitable funding to ensure all students have access to quality education.

ON-THE-GROUND UPDATE: Black-Led Charter Schools and Students Meet Georgia Elected Leaders  

 

More than 1,000 Georgia teachers and students from Black-led charter schools recently participated in an advocacy day at the Capitol alongside elected leaders. The event amplified the voices of these scholars, who advocated for the importance of charter schools in providing quality education for students of color.
