Change Maker Focus of the Day: Teachers

National Charter Schools Week - Day 2: Teacher Appreciation Day

The celebration of National Charter Schools Week continues with Day 2 of our campaign to highlight the Change Makers in our movement!

Today, our spotlight is on charter school teachers in recognition of National Teacher Appreciation Day. Our CEO Nina Rees reflected on the alignment of Teacher Appreciation Day and National Charter Schools Week in a piece for The 74: “I believe that no sector stands to empower and elevate teachers more than the charter school movement.”

In keeping with the celebration of teachers, check out today’s post on The Charter Blog where special guest author Sydney Chaffee reflects on her year as the first National Teacher of the Year from a charter school. We are excited to have her join us as a guest speaker at next month’s National Charter School Conference, too! There is still time to register to be with us in Austin, Texas, June 17-20.

Speaking of Texas—our friends at an IDEA public charter school in South Texas will taking over our Instagram for the day. Check it out at @charteralliance and don’t forget to use #CharterSchoolsWeek to share your Charter Schools Week activities with us on Twitter and Facebook.

Yesterday's Recap

National Charter Schools Week is building momentum as charter schools made headlines across the country yesterday. Topping the headlines, in Georgia, Gov. Nathan Deal signed two bills to help thousands of students find the best path to success in schools, careers, and in life.

This was not the only big news coming out of Day 1 of National Charter Schools Week. A number of state-based charter support organizations and a statehouse recognized the week’s importance via proclamations and press statements:

  • In Arizona, Governor Ducey released a proclamation declaring May 7–11, Arizona Charter Schools Week and acknowledged the 185,900 students who attend 556 public charter schools in Arizona.
  • The Florida Charter School Alliance released a press statement in recognition of National Charter Schools Week and is hosting three events at schools throughout the week.
  • Florida-based ExcelinEd released a press statement recognizing the state’s public charter school students and educators. They also announced the winners of the Choices in Education video contest.
  • In North Carolina, Rhonda Dillingham, executive director of the NC Association for Public Charter Schools, penned an op-ed, National Charter Schools Week 2018: It’s about the people, published in the New Bern (NC) Sun Journal.
  • Last week, the Maine Association for Charter Schools released a press statement, which was published in the Knox County (ME) Village Soup.
