Change Maker Focus of the Day: School Leadership

Welcome to the first day of National Charter Schools Week, May 7-11! This is a week we look forward to all year, as it is a time to highlight all the fantastic work happening every day at high-quality public charter schools across the country.

In keeping with the spirit of this celebration, President Trump declared this week as a time to commend our Nation’s successful public charter schools.

As part of our weeklong celebrations, the National Alliance will shine a spotlight on public charter school achievements by honoring the Change Makers of the public charter school movement. Today, our spotlight is School Leaders.

To kick off the week, we are happy to announce our 2018 National Charter School Hall of Fame honorees:

  • Camino Nuevo Charter Academy: Ana Ponce, CEO
  • IDEA Public Schools: JoAnn Gama, Co-Founder, President and Superintendent; and Tom Torkelson, Founder and CEO
  • Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School: Maquita Alexander, Head of School

You can read more about the Hall of Fame and the honorees here. They will be honored next month at the National Charter Schools Conference in Austin, Texas. Be sure to register today!

Also, check out The Charter Blog today to hear from Lagra Newman at Purpose Prep in Nashville, Tennessee. She was in Washington, D.C., earlier this year on behalf of the National Alliance and its School Leaders of Color (SLOC) initiative. During her time in the nation’s capital, she spoke with congressional staff about the importance of federal support and funding for independent charter schools like her own.

To join in the festivities, we have made it easy to join the conversation on Twitter (@charteralliance) as we amplify Change Maker stories and events all over the country. Below, please find today's suggested tweets:
