Star Academy hopes to become AL's first charter school

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - An east Birmingham school is looking to be one of the first charter schools in the state

Star Academy is awaiting state approval.

The community gathered Wednesday night to inform parents that their kids could have a choice. Often times, students attend zoned schools no matter if that school is considered a failing one.

The leaders of Star Academy hope to give parents better education options. The school is spearheaded by New Rising Star Church.

In tonight's meeting, they covered the basics.

The differences between charter and public schools and dispelled some of the rumors and myths of charter schools, one being charter schools requiring parents to pay a tuition, which is not the case.

Supporters say this is an effort to provide parents with another choice for their child.

"Schools of choice are a big need. I don't think a kid should have to go to a failing school because they live in that district. I think every kids should have a choice and we want to be that option for those kids," Pastor Thomas Beavers said.

If you recall the state legislature approved the state charter school bill back in 2015. Critics of charter schools have said it will take away funding from public schools.
