DeLeo goes against teachers' union, supports more charter schools
More charters 'right thing to do' for students
Going against the Massachusetts Teachers Association, House Speaker Robert DeLeo said Thursday that he will vote for more charter schools in the state.
The Beacon Hill power player and Democrat first announced his support for Question 2 during Thursday's taping of WCVB's "On The Record."
"I decided to do what I feel is best for students, whatever the political ramifications may be. I think it is the right thing to do," DeLeo said.
If approved, Question 2 would allow up to 12 approvals each year of either new charter schools or expanded enrollment for existing charter schools. The statewide public school enrollment in charter schools cannot exceed 1 percent of the student population.
