More than $33M raised by both sides in charter school fight

BOSTON (AP) — Both sides in the battle over a contentious charter school ballot question are raising money at a ferocious pace — topping a combined $33 million as of mid-October.

Great Schools Massachusetts, which supports the question, has raised more than $20.5 million, according to the most recent campaign finance reports filed with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

Save Our Public Schools, which opposes the question, has raised more than $12.5 million.

The ballot question would let Massachusetts add up to a dozen new or expanded charter schools each year outside of existing state caps.

Much of the money supporting the question has come from the New York-based Families for Excellent Schools. The vast majority of the money opposing the question has come from teachers unions.
